These 2-3 page double spaced papers should be an exploration of the ideas and theories related to the relevant course content from each chapter.

In Chapter 4 of “Gendered Voices, Feminist Visions,” Shaw and Lee analyze how cultural, institutional, and social actions shape gender. The main premise is that gender is a social construct that is regulated in numerous ways.
One important topic is “gender inscriptions”—how gender norms and expectations are symbolically engraved onto our bodies and thoughts from birth. Children quickly learn gender-appropriate behaviors, interests, and self-presentations from toys, media, dress standards, and authority figures’ overt/covert signals. Cross-gender people are often mocked, shunned, or punished to comply.
The authors examine how schools efficiently inscribe gender. School-concealed curricula and peer cultures sustain gender hierarchy despite gender equality laws.
