Week2 Journal
Unlike many authors of the 19th Century or even today, Kate Chopin does not assign any kind of moralizing in regard to her stories. As in most naturalistic fiction, morality, like reality, is completely relative. Chopin’s female characters usually undergo an awakening and desire to live free of expectations and societal norms that plague them and just for their own self-worth. These awakenings marked her character’s transition from blind compliance and devotion to enlightened self-discovery and fulfillment.
Answer each part of the question in the journal essay:
It seems that the most shocking element of “The Storm’ is in the conclusion. There is no moral retribution that one might expect for the act of adultery for either Calixta or Alcée. “The Storm” allows a woman to gain personal fulfillment and to remain happily married. Does the story end the way you expected it to?
Do you think that Mrs. Sommers purposefully put her needs over her children and husband’s or do you think that she just forgot about her priorities? What was Mrs. Sommers’ wish at the end of “A Pair of Silk Stockings”? What is the importance of her wanting this?
Examine the character of Armand in “Désirée’s Baby”. What motivates him? Is he pitiable or not? Did Armand ever love Désirée? Does he have a choice at the end of the story regarding Désirée and the baby? Argue whether or not Armand knew he was “tainted” before discovering the letter at the end of the story.
